On January 19th 2007 a fundraising dinner was organised at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island to benefit the programmes of the Ovie Brume Foundation and contribute to the development the Ovie Brume Centre. The Foundation has acquired 3 acres of land along the Maroko – Epe Expressway adjacent to the Lagos Business School, on which it will construct an educational and cultural centre consisting of the Ovie Brume Library and Resource Centre and a permanent home for the Youth Centre. It will also house the administrative offices for The Ovie Brume Foundation.
The Ovie Brume Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2002 to commemorate the memory of Ovierhire Adeyemi Kesiena Brume by supporting his commitment to Nigeria’s development, and working to realise his vision for a society where the young have easy access to information and resources required for personal development and success in their endeavours. Ovie was born on July 21, 1973 to Fred Brume and Evelyn Oputu and was the only son among four children. He was a high achiever who excelled both academically and in sporting activities. On December 11, 2002, he passed away unexpectedly aged 29 years.
The fundraising dinner gave the friends and family of Ovie the opportunity to show the public what they had
done in the 5 years since his death and to gain their support as they embark on the next phase of the Foundation’s strategic plan. The guests were very supportive indeed and impressed by the Ovie Brume Foundation’s quiet determination to positively impact on the development of Nigerian youth and young entrepreneurs.
The Ovie Brume Youth Centre was formally commissioned on December 11, 2003 and since then has grown into a fully functional facility providing a wide range of programmes and activities for youth that would not normally have access to them, in a positive and safe environment at no cost to its members. Core programmes focus on the arts, computer literacy, leadership development workshops and motivational and career talks. Since its inception, over 300 students from 19 state schools on Lagos Island have benefited from their programmes.
The concept for the Ovie Brume Library and Resource Centre was developed in 2003 to meet Nigeria’s needs for a well-equipped public library to educate the populace and support the efforts of all who seek to improve themselves. Promising young Nigerian adults who are principled and demonstrate creativity, initiative and an aptitude for hard work, are groomed for leadership and supported and encouraged to reach higher levels of achievements. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to be self-sufficient by realising their potential and improving their core values through self-development, exposure and access to resources that would facilitate the establishment of organizations that create value in the business environment.
An estimated budget of under N1 billion is needed to complete construction of the Ovie Brume Centre and thanks to continued support both locally and internationally the Ovie Brume Foundation is now on the path to realising its mission.
