OVIE BRUME ANNUAL GLOBAL PEACE GAMES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Lagos, Nigeria; 20th October 2015

The Global Peace Games is an initiative of Civil Society Organizations that takes place annually at the grassroots level in communities across the world. The Game was founded in 2001 by “PLAY SOCCER”, a non-profit international organization committed to a culture of friendship, understanding and peace among a global network of children and young people. The games demonstrate the import of sports to unite, motivate, inspire, educate, and improve health and well being of children, thereby corroborating the United Nations and millennium development goals. In addition, the games strengthen communication between children and adults.

The Games are linked by common themes and encourage children and youth to share and celebrate the values and skills they learn on the playing field through sport and to find peaceful solutions in their daily lives and communities. The Games take place in the fall of each year at locally scheduled dates around the time of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

The Ovie Brume Foundation Youth Sports program provides a highly organized sports environment, ensuring that all young people have the opportunity to grow and develop emotionally and physically through participations in sports. We provide sports for development programs in swimming, taekwondo, football, basketball and track & field, and use this to teach goal setting, team building, team work, fairness, and discipline.

The Foundation also believes in the declaration of the 2030 Development Agenda, which recognizes sport as:

“…an important enabler of sustainable development. The growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace cannot be overemphasized world over, its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.”

The event is scheduled for October 24th, 2015 by 10am at the Sports Centre, University of Lagos, Akoka. The games will include March Past and Track & Field Games.  In addition, a special message sent by the United Nations Special Advisor on sports development and peace will be read and all children and young people present will sign the UNESCO manifesto for a culture of peace and non- violence.
