Ovie Brume Foundation prioritises activities which ignites ideas and motivates children to improve their educational and personal development. In lieu of this, the Foundation celebrated 2019 Children’s Day. The Children’s Day celebration kicked off on May 7th 2019 with an Essay writing competition, two representatives were selected from 28 schools (10 Primary, 9 Junior Secondary and 9 Senior Secondary Schools) within communities in Eti-Osa Local Government. The primary school students wrote essay on “Who is your hero and why”, while the Junior and Senior secondary school students wrote essay on the topics: “Technology: A distraction or a bonus” and “Free Education for All? Pros, Cons, and Alternatives” respectively.
To kickstart the 2019 Children’s Day Celebration, Ovie Brume Foundation organized the second edition of its Essay Writing Competition aimed at improving Literacy and ICT skills of public school children in Lagos state. 27 public primary and secondary schools participated in the Essay Writing competition which was conducted at the ICT room of Ovie Brume Foundation.
The essay competition was followed by the main Children`s Day celebration event which was commemorated on 25th May 2019, at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos. The 2019 Children’s Day celebration had in attendance about over 800 children from 32 public primary and secondary schools and 115 adults comprising of teachers, school heads and dignitaries from the education ministry in Lagos State, Access Bank Plc, Cadbury Plc, Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency and Lagoon Hospital.
Key highlights of the event include presenting of the gifts to winners in different categories of the Essay competition by Mrs. (Alhaja) Sarat Tejumola Giwa (SUBEB, Board Member) who represented Mr Ganiyu Sopeyin (Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board). Omorin Oladejo, Product manager, Access Bank educated participants on financial attitudes and skills necessary to make informed financial choices. She charged students to inculcate saving habits, set financial goals and make the right decision. The event had other activities such as Spelling Bee, Brainteasers, Games, Talent hunts, Spoken words, Dance amongst other side attractions. 2019 Children’s Day celebration provided an avenue for participants to holistically strive for excellence in all areas, not restricting to only the education aspect.
